How to exchange your HK driving licence

If you have a Hong Kong driving licence, you can exchange it for a UK driving licence. You will need to become a UK resident, living in the UK for 185 days in each calendar year, in order to exchange your Hong Kong driving licence to the UK one.

When you arrive in the UK, you can continue to use your Hong Kong driving licence. After 12 months, you must exchange it to a UK driving licence to continue driving in the UK.

Your car insurance may be cheaper when you have a UK licence.

You lose your Hong Kong driving licence once you have exchanged it for the UK driving licence.

You will need to pass both a theory and practical driving test to exchange your ‘provisional’ licence for a ‘full’ licence. In the UK you can use your driving licence as photo ID in many instances.

When you move house, you must remember to inform DVLA so a new licence can be issued.
